Quick answer Kali Puja 2026 (Shyama Puja) falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026 (23 Kartik 1433 Bangabda), the Kartik Amavasya night that most of India celebrates as Diwali. The main Nishita Kaal puja is from 11:39 PM on 8 November to 12:31 AM on 9 November (IST). Bhoot Chaturdashi, with its 14 lamps and 14 greens, falls on Saturday, 7 November. The signature fragrances are dhuno resin burned in a clay dhunuchi, guggal or loban for the dhupam offering, and Bhimseni camphor for aarti. |
On the same moonless night that most of India lights diyas for Lakshmi, Bengal, Odisha, Assam and Tripura stay up for someone else. Kali Puja, also called Shyama Puja, is worshipped at midnight, with red hibiscus, the beat of the dhak and thick, sweet-smelling smoke rising from a dhunuchi.
If you are hosting the puja at home this year, or celebrating far from Kolkata and want to get it right, this guide covers the confirmed 2026 date and muhurat, how the puja is done step by step, a complete samagri checklist and the part most guides skip: which dhoop, resin and camphor belong at each moment of the ritual.

Kali Puja and Diwali: why two pujas on one night?
Both festivals fall on Kartik Amavasya, but they worship different forms of the Goddess. Across most of India, the night is for Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, worshipped in the early evening. In Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, Bangladesh and parts of Bihar such as Bhagalpur, the same night belongs to Kali, the fierce form of the Divine Mother who destroys ignorance and fear. Her puja is performed in the dead of night, during Nishita Kaal.
The two traditions overlap in interesting ways. At Kolkata’s Kalighat temple, Kali is worshipped as Lakshmi on this night, and many Bengali households do a small Lakshmi puja in the evening before the Kali puja at midnight. For the North Indian side of the night, see our Diwali 2026 Lakshmi Puja guide.
Bhoot Chaturdashi (7 November): the night before
Bhoot Chaturdashi is the Bengali observance on the eve of Kali Puja, when families light 14 lamps and eat 14 leafy greens to keep away restless spirits and honour 14 generations of ancestors. It is Bengal’s counterpart to Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali.
• Choddo shaak: 14 kinds of leafy greens cooked together and eaten at lunch.
• Choddo prodip: 14 earthen lamps lit at dusk and placed at the doorway, windows, staircases and dark corners of the home.
• Fragrance: A gentle, cleansing dhoop suits the evening. Many families light a stick of Bhimseni Kapoor dhoop or a pinch of loban resin as the lamps are placed.
How to perform Kali Puja at home: step by step
Temple and pandal pujas are long, Tantric-influenced rituals led by a purohit. A home puja is simpler and follows the classical sequence of offerings (upacharas). Here is a practical order:
1. Prepare the altar before dusk. Clean the space, draw a white rice-paste alpona at the threshold, and place a clay idol or framed image of Maa Kali on a red cloth.
2. Light the diyas at dusk. Place mustard-oil earthen lamps at the entrance, windows and balcony. Many families light 108 diyas around the puja space.
3. Begin with dhyanam (meditation) and avahanam (invocation). Sit quietly, meditate on the Goddess and invite her presence.
4. Offer flowers as her seat (pushpanjali-asanam). Offer five flowers, ideally red hibiscus.
5. Make the nine offerings (navopachara): water for the feet (padyam), water for the head (arghyam), red sandalwood paste with unbroken rice (gandhakshata), flowers (pushpam), incense (dhupam), lamp (deepam), food (naivedyam), water to sip (achamaniyam) and betel leaf (tambulam).
6. Offer the hibiscus garland and bhog. A garland of 108 red hibiscus is traditional. Bhog usually includes khichdi, labra, fried vegetables, payesh and sweets.
7. Perform the midnight puja in Nishita Kaal. Chant Om Krim Kalikayai Namah 108 times or read the Karpuradi Stotra between 11:39 PM and 12:31 AM.
8. Do the aarti. Wave the panchapradip, then a camphor flame, then the dhunuchi, to the sound of the conch and bell.
9. Conclude with samarpanam. Offer the puja to the Goddess and ask forgiveness for any mistakes. If you used a clay idol, immerse it the next morning.
Where a symbolic bali (sacrifice) is part of your family tradition, households today offer an ash gourd (chal kumro), sugarcane or cucumber.

The fragrance of Kali Puja: dhuno, dhunuchi and the right dhoop
Smoke is not a background detail in Kali Puja; it is an offering. Dhupam is one of the nine upacharas, and the dhunuchi aarti is one of the most recognisable sights of Bengal’s festive season. Here is what each fragrance does and when to use it.
Dhuno and the dhunuchi
Dhuno is a natural tree resin, traditionally from the sal tree, that releases a thick, sweet, woody smoke when sprinkled over burning coconut husk in a clay dhunuchi. It is the scent most Bengalis associate with Durga Puja and Kali Puja. If authentic dhuno is hard to find where you live, a pure resin such as dry guggal or loban gives a similar deep, sacred smoke over coconut husk. Browse the full pure resin collection.
Bhimseni camphor for aarti
Camphor burns with a clean, bright flame and leaves almost no residue, which is why it closes the aarti. Bhimseni camphor is the natural, crystal form preferred for puja; read more in our Bhimseni camphor guide.
Dhoop sticks and cones for the long night
Kali Puja runs from dusk past midnight, so you also need a steady, gentle fragrance between rituals. Charcoal-free dhoop keeps the room fragrant without the harsh smoke of cheap agarbatti.

How to light a dhunuchi at home safely
A dhunuchi gets very hot and produces dense smoke, so a little preparation makes it safer, especially in apartments.
1. Fill the dhunuchi about two-thirds with dried coconut husk, loosely packed so air can circulate.
2. Light the husk with a match or a camphor tablet and let it catch until it glows rather than flames.
3. Sprinkle resin a pinch at a time. A small pinch of dhuno or guggal produces plenty of smoke; add more only as it fades.
4. Hold it by the base or handle with a cloth, and set it down only on a metal plate or tile, never on wood or cloth.
5. Keep it away from curtains, hibiscus garlands and children, and do the dhunuchi aarti near an open window or door.
6. Put it out properly. Cover the husk with sand or ash once the aarti ends; do not pour water into a hot clay dhunuchi, as it can crack.
Resin smoke is dense. Keep the room ventilated, limit the dhunuchi to the aarti itself, and keep pets, infants and anyone with asthma in another room. Our pet owner’s guide to incense has more on this.
Where Kali Puja is celebrated
• West Bengal: The biggest celebrations are in Kolkata, Barasat and Tamluk, with all-night pandals. Kalighat and Dakshineswar, where Sri Ramakrishna worshipped, draw the largest crowds.
• Odisha, Assam, Tripura and Jharkhand: Major community pujas on the same Amavasya night.
• Bihar: Especially the Anga region around Bhagalpur.
• Bangladesh and the Bengali diaspora worldwide, often on the nearest weekend.

When is Bhoot Chaturdashi 2026?
Bhoot Chaturdashi 2026 is on Saturday, 7 November, the day before Kali Puja. Families eat 14 leafy greens (choddo shaak) and light 14 lamps (choddo prodip) at dusk.
What is dhuno and why is it used in Kali Puja?
Dhuno is a natural tree resin, traditionally from the sal tree, burned over coconut husk in a clay dhunuchi. Its thick, sweet smoke is offered to the Goddess during aarti and is believed to purify the space.
Which incense is best for Kali Puja?
Use resin dhoop such as dhuno, guggal or loban for the dhupam offering and dhunuchi aarti, Bhimseni camphor for the camphor aarti, and a gentle charcoal-free dhoop stick or cone, such as Kesar Kasturi or sandal, to keep the room fragrant through the night.
Which flowers are offered to Maa Kali?
Red hibiscus (rakta jaba) is Maa Kali’s favourite flower. A garland of 108 red hibiscus is traditional, along with bel leaves.
Can I do Kali Puja at home without a priest?
Yes. A simple home puja with dhyanam, the nine offerings, the mantra Om Krim Kalikayai Namah chanted 108 times, and aarti is widely practised. Elaborate Tantric rites are best left to an experienced purohit.
